Live wallpapers are officially back in iOS 17! Take a look at this wallpaper here; it’s animated right there on the lock screen. Every time I wake up my iPhone, I get the animation for the live wallpaper in iOS 17. Yes, Apple had removed this feature with iOS 16, where you had to long-press to customize your lock screen. But now, Apple has added this as automatic automation when you wake up your iPhone, and it looks beautiful and awesome.

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to create your very own live wallpaper for the lock screen of your iPhone in iOS 17. First things first, these live wallpapers will be created from live photos taken with your iPhone’s camera.
How Set Live Wallpaper in iOS 17
Step 1: Enable Live Photos
To create live wallpapers, you need to have Live Photos enabled on your iPhone’s camera. Here’s how you can do it:
- Open the camera app on your iPhone.
- Select the photo option (at the bottom) and ensure “Live” is turned on (top right). This will capture about two and a half seconds of motion in every picture.
Step 2: Capture the Live Photo
Now, it’s time to capture the live photo that you want to use as your live wallpaper. Follow these steps:
- Find a suitable subject that you want to capture as a live photo.
- Tap the shutter button to take the photo. Try adding some motion to the scene to make the live wallpaper more interesting.
- Sometimes, especially in beta versions or certain scenarios, you might get a message saying “Motion not available.” In that case, retake the photo until it works.
Step 3: Adding the Live Animation
Once you’ve taken your live photo, it’s time to add the live animation to your lock screen. Here’s how you can do it:
- Go to the Photos app and find the live photo you just captured.
- Tap on the live photo to open it.
- Swipe up on the photo to reveal the options menu.
- Tap on “Live Photo” at the top, and you’ll see the animation play automatically.
Step 4: Set the Live Wallpaper
Now that you have the live animation ready, let’s set it as your lock screen wallpaper:
- Tap the share icon (a box with an arrow pointing up) in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap “Use as Wallpaper.”
- Move and scale the live photo to fit your lock screen properly.
- Make sure the “Live Photo” option is selected, and tap “Set.”
- Choose “Set Lock Screen” to apply the live wallpaper to your lock screen.
Step 5: Customizing Live Wallpapers
You can always customize your live wallpapers later if you wish. Here’s how:
- Long-press on the lock screen to enter the customization mode.
- Tap on “Lock Screen” to access the lock screen options.
- You can stop the motion or re-enable the motion for the live wallpaper from here.
Step 6: Get Creative
Feel free to get creative with your live wallpapers! Experiment with different subjects and motions to create stunning live wallpapers that suit your style and personality.
